The Mazda Foundation recently awarded eight students with Mazda scholarships for the 2012 Youth for Understanding (YFU) Japanese exchange program. Mazda offered scholarships to eight international high school students wanting to further their education in Japan. The winners will live with host families for six weeks near the automaker’s international headquarters in Hiroshima. Five of the scholarship winners are the children of Mazda employees. The three remaining winners live across the U.S., ranging from Washington to Virginia.

Since its inception in 1984, The Mazda Foundation has supported the YFU to encourage a relationship between America and Japan. The automaker hopes to build a ‘cross-cultural’ appreciation and understanding for students across the globe. The scholarship, worth $9,025, provides round-trip air travel, six weeks with a host family, orientation and a variety of other services.

Over 225,000 students have participated in the YFU exchange program. Starting at the University of California – Berkeley, the program first helps the students gain understanding of the Japanese language, customs and culture. After three days, students then make their way to Japan where they will get a true taste of Japanese culture. They will partake in local activities, visit schools and have time to spend with their host families. The trip ends with meeting Mazda developers and Takashi Yamanouchi, Mazda Motor Corporation President and CEO.
